J.C. Ryle (1816 - 1900)
Listen to freely downloadable audio sermons by the speaker J.C. Ryle in mp3 format. J.C. Ryle was a prolific writer, vigorous preacher, faithful pastor, husband of three wives, [widowed three times: Matilda died in 1847, Jessie died in 1860, Henrietta died in 1889] and the father to five children [1 with Matilta and 4 with Jessie]. He was thoroughly evangelical in his doctrine and uncompromising in his Biblical principles. In 1880, after 38 years in Pastoral ministry in rural England, at age 64, he became the first Anglican bishop of Liverpool. He retired in 1900 at age 83 and died later the same year at the age of 84.

“He [J.C. Ryle] was great through the abounding grace of God. He was great in stature; great in mental power; great in spirituality; great as a preacher and expositor of God’s most holy Word; great in hospitality; great as a writer of Gospel tracts; great as a Bishop of the Reformed Evangelical Protestant Church in England, of which he was a noble defender; great as first Bishop of Liverpool. I am bold to say, that perhaps few men in the nineteenth century did as much for God, for truth, and for righteousness, among the English speaking race, and in the world, as our late Bishop.”
This recording is a "narration about the life and ministry of George Whitefield, taken from the book 'Christian leaders of the 18th Century, by Bishop J.C. Ryle'". This qoute "I will wait for the gracious assistance of God" is attributed to Whitefield by an eyewitness to his last public sermon, reportedly having said this after he arose from his seat and was not able to speak for several minutes. He goes on to say "For He will, I am certain, assist me once more to speak in His name." The narration goes on to say that " by 6:30 the next morning, the great preacher was dead. If ever man was ready for this change, Whitefield was that man. When his time came, he had nothing to do, but to die."",

Bishop J. C. Ryle was always anxious to speak plainly, with words that had meaning and real application to his hearers, and his sermon entitled “The True Church” focuses our attention upon that great verse from Matthew 16:18 “Upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” He is particularly concerned to draw our attention to five things that this verse speaks of, Bishop Ryle's own words: 1: You have a building: “My Church” 2: A Builder: Christ says, “I will build My Church” 3: A Foundation: “Upon this rock I will build my church” 4: Perils Implied: “The gates of hell” 5: Security asserted: “The gates of hell shall not prevail against it” “Are you upon the rock?” he asks, “Come to Christ” he implores his hearers, and to those who believe he exhorts to “Live like citizens of heaven…….like men who look for that blessed hope – the second coming of Jesus Christ.",
